The Discovery
In September 1991, two hikers crossing the Ötztal Alps found a body emerging from the ice. They assumed it was a recent accident victim. It wasn't.
When
3,300 BC
Found 5,300 years after his death, preserved perfectly by glacier ice.
Where
3,210 metres above sea level
On the ridge between Austria and Italy. He was moving through one of the most hostile environments on Earth.
His kit
Clothing from five different animals
Bear hide boots. Grass insulation. Deer leg leggings. Each material chosen for a specific function. No brand — just judgment.
His tools
A copper axe
The most advanced material of his era. He wasn't behind the times — he was at the leading edge of what was possible.
His bow
Unfinished
Still being worked on when he died. He was mid-process. Not waiting until things were perfect.
His end
An arrowhead to the shoulder
He was murdered. But he made it further than whoever was chasing him. The mountain kept score. It always does.
He was in his forties. Not young, not reckless. Experienced. He carried a first aid kit — bracket fungus with known antibiotic properties, carried deliberately. He wasn't lucky. He was prepared, capable, and moving with purpose through terrain that would kill the unprepared without a second thought.
Who he is to us
Five thousand three hundred years ago, a man crossed the Alps. He wasn't racing. He wasn't performing. He was moving through one of the most hostile environments on Earth with the tools he had, the knowledge he'd earned, and the body he'd built.
He didn't survive because he was the fastest or the best-equipped. He survived because he understood the mountain — and the mountain, for a time, let him through.
He is in our logo because he represents something that's been stripped from modern outdoor culture: the idea that the mountain doesn't care about your gear. It cares whether you belong there.
Ötzi is the oldest Modern Savage we know of. Not a benchmark of performance, but a test of authenticity. Are you here because you've earned it, or because you bought it?
We believe the terrain always knows the difference.
